El Morado Glacier (3.100 m. - 10.170 ft.)
Andes Range
An overwhelming Andean setting
Highlight
We will walk through a spectacular Andean valley to get to a vertical hanging glacier that falls from the beautiful mountain El Morado (4.600 m. – 15.082 ft.) down to a lagoon that carries the same name. We will be in the depths of the Andes, along with other impressive mountains and glaciers that complete the majestic setting of this place.
Description
From the Andean village of Banos Morales (1.800 m. – 5.901 ft.) a car path enters through the south bank of the river Volcan, to then serpent its way to the Morado valley. Here, from a place known as La Yesera, at 2.500 m. (8.196 ft.) of altitude, we will begin walking through the valley.
It is initially very wide, though it will narrow as we gain height until it is completely closed. To your surprise, we will find ourselves with an enormous ice wall and its lagoon. In its waters, we will see floating icebergs. It is a truly amazing sight, and so are the surroundings where other mountains such as Loma Larga and Cortaderas make themselves present with their own glaciers and colors.
| Time Required Vehicle: 92 km. (57 mi.) up to Banos Morales, and another 10 km. (6 mi.) to La Yesera. This takes about2½ hours from Escuela Militar. Walking: From La Yesera to the lagoon it is 2-4 hours and 1-2 hours back. The time we may take depends on the amount of snow that there is. Total: The entire day is of 9-11 hours from and to Escuela Militar.
NOTE: We offer the possibility of extending this trek to an additional day, camping at the lagoon El Morado and trekking the neighboring valley of Morales the next day. See trek El Morado Natural Monument and Glacier. |
